The American state of Texas has officially named a section of a highway to honor Korean War veterans to mark the 70th anniversary this year of the bilateral alliance between Korea and the U.S.

The Korean Consulate General in Houston on Feb. 2 said the Texas legislature has named a portion of State Highway 54 near El Paso as "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway" and will hold on Feb. 4 an unveiling ceremony for the road signs inscribed with the title.

The memorial section is part of a federal highway spanning a combined 1,197 miles (1,926 km) stretching from El Paso to Griggsville, Illinois.

Scheduled to attend the ceremony are Texas Sen. Cesar Blanco, a member of the Democratic Party who proposed the bill for the name, Texas Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (Democrat-El Paso), Korean War veterans and members of the ethnic Korean community.

Blanco said the young heroes who fought in the war sacrificed themselves to protect Korean democracy, adding that they must never be forgotten.

In March last year, a portion of Highway 37 in Sonoma County, California, was named "Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway."
