Dear Korean-Americans, join the national rally of the Korean-American Women's Association of the USA in June!

The Korean-American Women's Association of the USA (KAWAUSA) is an organization created by Sylvia Patton (current chairperson) by gathering Korean-American women’s groups in six states. It is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization registered to the U.S. federal government, which aims to build a network of interracially married women who are actively carrying out voluntary services and social activities in various societies in the U.S. The organization's goal also includes contributing to establishment of the identity of multicultural family members and the effective people-to-people diplomacy of its members by continuously exchanging culture and useful information.

The KAWA will be hosting the national rally at Sheraton Hotel in Detroit from June 3 to June 4, 2023. This event prepares the 19th anniversary event of the KAWA, the national rally, and the national convention and next generation conference. Any second-generation Korean American families can apply and participate. The event will begin with the pre-night banquet on June 3 and host various programs and the national convention and next generation conference on June 4.

Finding Roots of Korea
The topic of the conference is “Finding Roots of Korea - The Deeply-Rooted Tree.” It represents a hope that the youth taking a new leap forward to have the identity as Korean and lead the 120-year history of immigration to the U.S. Accordingly, the programs and schedules were arranged with content for the next-generation Koreans to have pride as Koreans.

The next-generation leadership programs include Youth Samulnori, Youth Orchestra, and Gayageum and Daegeum performances in addition to a lecture by a guest speaker under the theme of “Bridge to the Future” for allowing the next generation to plan and spread their future dreams. This will be a great opportunity for the second-generation Koreans and the older generations to share their thoughts about the future and dreams. Furthermore, the next-generation youths will learn the importance of the Korean language, history, and culture and build a close relationship with the motherland. It would be an honor for the next-generation youths that many Korean organizations in the U.S. are gathering and preparing such event for the bright future of the second-generation Korean Americans. We are devoted to this event so that second-generation Korean Americans can participate in the KAWAUSA events to learn the roots of Korea and grow as model members of the community to which they belong. The next-generation youths will grow as leaders of Korean organizations in the future through our endeavors.

The KAWAUSA’s efforts to pass the bill for granting retroactive citizenship to Korean adoptees
The KAWAUSA will be also hosting a seminar during the national rally. Korean adoptees' rights will be discussed during the seminar. The KAWAUSA has been striving with many other organizations to pass the bill for granting retroactive citizenship to adoptees through the petition with signatures, but the bill has not been passed yet. Adoptees who did not get their citizenships after being adopted to the U.S. cannot benefit from various systems such as education and medicine. And when they grow up in such a state, they even have difficulty finding jobs due to their lack of citizenship. In the worst case scenario, they can be deported to the birthplace. That is why the KAWAUSA is taking an active part in this. The event also offers programs teaching oriental painting and hypogastric breathing.

How to participate
Jessica Wioskowski (Kwon Jeong-hee), the president of the KAWAUSA who is in charge of overall supervision of the event, emphasized the significance of hosting the event in Michigan and said “This is the first time to host KAWAUSA’s national rally in Michigan since it was found in 2004. It will be a great opportunity for members from other states to visit Michigan. The members from Michigan can form an inter-state network with other members from all over the state.” For the smooth operation of the event, the Korean American Women’s Association of Michigan had a webinar through Zoom with the management of KAWA in Maryland, Minnesota, Alabama, Utah, Virginia, and Florida and the executives of the Korean American Community of Metro Detroit and Cultural Center on February 20. Multicultural family members and all second-generation Korean Americans who wish to participate can submit an application. The deadline is May 1.
