Domestic semiconductor production by 2032 is projected to account for a record high of nearly 20% of the global total.

In their joint report "Emerging Resilience in the Semiconductor Supply Chain," the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association and Boston Consulting Group on May 8 said Korea is expected to control 19% of global chip output in eight years.

The nation's expected share was higher than those of the U.S. (14%) and Taiwan (17%) and only trailed leader China's (21%), as well as up two percentage points from Korea's 17% in 2022.

The rate of increase in Korea's chip production from 2022-32 (129%) was second only to that of the U.S. (203%), mainly thanks to the expansion of output capacity due to construction of semiconductor processing plants.

The report said, "South Korea invested early in the development of its semiconductor industry and supported the growth of Samsung and SK Hynix into global semiconductor leaders; together, they majority share in the global NAND flash memory and DRAM chips markets, respectively."
