Major Paris expo to feature traditional Korean crafts

Traditional crafts designated national intangible heritage will be displayed in France.


The Korea Heritage Service (KHS) on Sept. 4 said that in collaboration with the Korea Heritage Agency, it will take part in the exhibition "2024 Maison & Objet" from Sept. 5-11 to showcase traditional handicrafts at the Nort Villepinte Convention Center of Paris.


The exhibition hall run by the KHS at this year's exhibition features traditional crafts used in daily life, plus has explanations of intangible cultural heritage items and sells crafts.


On display are about 110 crafts of 37 types that masters designated intangible cultural heritage and contemporary designers collaborated to create. They include an octagonal box featuring a transparent plate made of thinly ground ox horn.


Thirty artworks in six categories will be shown by artisans designated intangible cultural heritage who have national certification through a national system of traditional craft certification. They include a handmade Hanji (traditional paper) set made by master craftsman An Chi-yong and a a pen knife by Park Namjung, a master of jangdojang (ornamental knife making) .


As the world's largest interior and design exhibition, "Maison & Object" marks its 30th anniversary this year. Over 2,500 companies participate and about 70,000 industry figures and visitors visit every year.


Since 2016, the KHS has participated in the exhibition to promote the excellence and uniqueness of Korean handicrafts to the world.


KHS said, "Through a revival project for traditional crafts including the development of traditional craft designs and an accreditation system that we are promoting, we will continue proactive measures to form an overseas sales base for such crafts."
