The next generation of Super Rapid Trains (SRT) will have the world's first automatic fire suppression system designed specifically for fires in lithium polymer batteries.

SRT operator SR on April 14 said it will install the system on the next-generation SRT train model EMU-320, which is slated to debut in 2027.

The EMU-320 will use lithium polymer batteries more efficiently in charging time, lifespan and size compared to conventional nickel-cadmium batteries.

When a lithium polymer battery explodes, it triggers a thermal runaway phenomenon causing the temperature to instantly soar above 1,000 degrees Celsius, making fire extinguishing difficult.

The new system is activated automatically inside the battery box in the event of fire. Once the temperature sensor detects heat of over 120 degrees, it releases an extinguishing agent in the early stage of a fire.

Passing quality certification tests early this month by the Fire Insurers Laboratories of Korea, the system will be installed in all new SRT trains.
