The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Nov. 4 announced the country's reelection to the board of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for the fifth straight time.
The WADA Executive Board is the organization's highest decision-making body that deliberates and decides on policies and projects to prevent doping. Korea, Japan, China and Saudi Arabia are the Asian members on the board each with a term of three years.
Korea served on the board from 1999, when WADA was launched, to 2006 and has been reelected since rejoining in 2014. The nation's latest term expires in 2028.
In addition, Busan next month will make Korea the first Asian country to host the annual WADA General Assembly, which is held every six years. There, representatives from global sports organizations like the WADA president and International Olympic Committee members will join government officials from all over the world to discuss strategies for anti-doping policies for the next six years.
The ministry said, "Korea's reelection to the WADA Executive Board and hosting of the general assembly in Busan will offer an opportunity to raise global cooperation in anti-doping efforts and boost integrity and fairness in sports."
